The former president of South Korea has been charged with “aiding the enemy” for sending drones with leaflets to the DPRK.
According to the South Korean special prosecutor, the country’s former president, Yun Seok-yeol, ordered a secret operation using drones in October 2024 in North Korean territory to provoke retaliation and use it as a pretext for imposing martial law.
The DPRK announced at the time that drones from South Korea dropped leaflets on Pyongyang and released photos of the wreckage of the crashed drone. The South Korean special prosecutor’s team believes that the deployment of drones led to the leakage of military secrets to North Korea.
In early December 2024, Yun Seok-yeol declared a state of emergency in South Korea, explaining this by the need to “root out North Korean anti-state forces” and called on opposition parties to stop “outrageous actions that are paralyzing the country’s work.”
