During the daring theft of $102 million worth of jewelry at the Louvre Museum last month, the password to the museum’s surveillance system was “Louvre,” ABC News reported, citing a museum employee.
The revelation has sparked severe criticism of the museum’s security, especially after the high-profile theft.
During testimony before a French Senate committee, Louvre President and Director Laurence de Carre said that the only camera outside the Apollo Gallery was facing west and did not capture the window through which the thieves entered and exited with cutting tools.
According to De Carre, all the museum’s cameras and alarm systems were operational, but a weak link existed in the security system due to insufficient funding.
According to him, the security system installed at the Apollo Gallery worked flawlessly. Still, it needed to be adapted to new types of attacks that were difficult to predict and anticipate.
The investigation into the robbery is ongoing: the jewelry lost from the museum has not yet been found, but four people have already been charged.
