Dick Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States and one of the most powerful vice presidents in modern history, has died at the age of 84, his family said.
Cheney served as Vice President for both terms under Republican President George W. Bush, from 2001 to 2009. He was a key figure in the “war on terror” and helped lead the country through the Iraq war.
Cheney has been an influential and controversial figure in Washington for decades. In recent years, however, he has distanced himself from his party, sharply criticizing President Donald Trump, whom he has called “a coward” and the greatest threat to the republic.
Cheney cast his last presidential vote in 2024 for Democrat Kamala Harris.
Cheney suffered from cardiovascular disease throughout his adult life, surviving several strokes and undergoing a heart transplant in 2012, after which he lived for many years.
