Hurricanes are among the most dangerous natural disasters in America, causing the most deaths and material damage. Since 1980, they have caused more than $1.5 trillion in damage to the United States and claimed more than 7,000 lives.
Artificial intelligence (AI) can significantly accelerate forecasting without sacrificing accuracy. Scientists have already developed deep neural network models that can predict sea level rise in seconds from wind field and atmospheric pressure data.
AI can also be effective in regions with scarce historical data. With physics-based models, it is possible to create “artificial” scenarios by teaching AI different possible situations that have not yet occurred. Thus, AI can quickly identify which areas are most at risk —for example, which streets are likely to flood.
