European countries are working with Ukraine on a new ceasefire proposal based on the current battle lines, Reuters reported. The proposal broadly builds on ideas already under discussion, emphasizing the need to maintain the United States’ central role.
A European diplomat told Reuters that the proposal includes the creation of a peace council, to be chaired by US President Donald Trump and overseeing the implementation of the plan. “This is an effort by national security advisers to keep the United States involved,” the diplomat said.
European leaders on Tuesday urged Washington to insist on an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, on the condition that the current battle lines be accepted as the basis for further negotiations.
Representatives from 35 countries supporting Ukraine will meet in London on Friday to discuss providing long-term support to Kyiv. Trump is also likely to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the coming weeks.
It is also noted that the council’s idea is based on the 20-point plan proposed by the United States for the Gaza Strip.
Assuming both sides agree to a ceasefire, they will begin negotiations on the territories, but the territories occupied by Russia will not be recognized as Russian, the senior diplomat said.
“We tried this effort in May and August. But Russia shows no sign of changing its position,” the source told Reuters. Asked whether this was a new version of the old points, the diplomat replied: “In some ways, yes, but with some new elements.”
