OpenAI plans to allow a broader range of content on its ChatGPT platform, including erotic content, available only to verified adult users. This was announced by the company’s head, Sam Altman, noting that the new approach aims to “treat adults as adults.”
According to Altman, in future versions, ChatGPT will be able to operate in a more “humane way,” but this feature will be voluntary and available only to those who confirm their age. His announcement is reminiscent of the recent move by Elon Musk’s xAI company, which introduced two sexual chatbots on the Grok platform. Analysts believe this decision by OpenAI could drive paid subscription growth.
The changes follow a lawsuit filed in the United States over the death of 16-year-old Adam Raine. His parents had accused OpenAI, claiming that ChatGPT’s parental controls were insufficient. Altman said the company had previously intentionally limited ChatGPT’s capabilities to mitigate mental health risks. Now, he said, OpenAI has developed tools that will allow it to “safely loosen the restrictions.”
Experts say ChatGPT’s success is poised to continue its rapid growth and strengthen its position in the market.
