The number of people over 100 in Japan has reached 99,763, setting another record.
According to the central population registry, as of September 1, there were 4,644 more centenarians living in the country than last year.
The vast majority of older people, about 88%, are women.
The oldest resident of Japan is 114-year-old Kagawa Shigeko, and the oldest man is 111-year-old Midzuno Kiyotaka.
The leader in the number of centenarians is Shimane Prefecture, where there are 169 centenarians per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Kochi and Tottori Prefectures.
Japan remains one of the countries with the highest average life expectancy in the world, and the number of centenarians here is steadily increasing each year.
