One of the most powerful earthquakes in Afghanistan in years has killed at least 2,200 people, according to the latest figures. Another aftershock, measuring 6.2, struck the region on Sunday, the third since Sunday.
The vast majority of the deaths were in the mountainous province of Kunar. The Taliban government said 2,205 people were killed there and at least 3,640 were injured.
Another 12 people were killed and hundreds were injured in neighboring Nangarhar and Laghman provinces.
Hundreds of bodies were found in collapsed houses during rescue operations on Thursday. A government spokesman said rescuers and volunteers were continuing to work to clear the rubble.
