The UN has called for an independent and comprehensive investigation into the killings by Israel in the Gaza Strip, including the “double strike” on Nasser Hospital.
The incident killed 20 people, including five journalists. The UN also demanded that justice be ensured and the perpetrators held accountable.
“Justice is needed,” a spokesperson for the UN human rights office told reporters in Geneva. He stressed that the high number of journalists killed in Gaza raises serious questions about the deliberate targeting of media workers.
According to reports, Israel struck Nasser Hospital, the last public medical facility in southern Gaza, twice on Monday. According to witnesses, the second strike was carried out when rescuers and journalists arrived at the scene about 15 minutes after the first bombardment to evacuate the wounded. As a result, both rescuers and journalists were killed.
The “double strike” killed employees of Reuters, Associated Press, and Al Jazeera, as well as independent journalists. The three reputable international media outlets have already issued statements mourning the deaths of their colleagues and calling on Israel to investigate the incident immediately.
