Australia has said it will expel Iran’s ambassador after allegations of anti-Semitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne.
The head of the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO), Mike Burgess, said intelligence indicated that Iran was “likely” behind several attacks on Jews in Australia. “Iran has attempted to cover up its involvement, including the attacks on Lewis Continental Kitchen in Sydney on October 20 last year and the Adass Israel synagogue in Melbourne on December 6.”
Iran has yet to comment on the allegations. Iran’s ambassador to Australia, Ahmad Sadeghi, and three other Iranian officials have been ordered to leave Australia within seven days.
Foreign Minister Penny Wong said Australia would maintain some diplomatic ties with Tehran but would close its embassy in Iran.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that his government will designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.
