Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghayni stated that the initialing of the peace agreement by Azerbaijan and Armenia is a sovereign decision of the two countries. Still, there are two or three points related to it.
“As in the past, we welcome the initialing of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia; a peace agreement that will pave the way for stable security in the region.
Another point is the discussions on the creation of a route from Southern Armenia to Nakhichevan, on which we have repeatedly expressed our position. We have repeatedly stated that we are in favor of lifting the blockade and creating communication routes. Still, these routes should be implemented while maintaining internationally recognized borders and without changing geopolitical conditions,” he said.
Baghayni emphasized that Iran does not consider the presence of foreign armed forces in the region useful and expressed its concerns about it.
“We have been assured that foreign armed forces will not be deployed in the region,” he stressed.
According to the Foreign Ministry spokesman, one of the essential provisions of the peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia was the emphasis on not deploying foreign military forces on the borders of the two countries.
“We have expressed our concern about this, are closely following developments in this direction, and are in close contact with the governments of Azerbaijan and Armenia. We do not believe that the presence of foreign military forces in the region is conducive to peace and stability,” he added.
