Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, referring to the documents signed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, noted:
“As for relations with Armenia and Azerbaijan, it must be said that we have had many discussions with them. The Armenian Foreign Minister will call me tomorrow. Armenian Prime Minister Mr. Pashinyan will also call, and on Tuesday, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia is scheduled to visit Tehran. We are in constant consultations with the parties. Our position on Zangezur and the issues raised is apparent: we welcome any peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, and we have previously stated our readiness to cooperate and assist in the peace process between the two countries,” he said, Irna—ir reports.
The Iranian Foreign Minister noted that their positions on the region are also clear.
“We want all countries in the region to maintain full sovereignty over their territories, and we support the territorial integrity of all countries in the region. We also protect international borders and do not accept any changes to them. The joint statement of Armenia and Azerbaijan includes the following three principles: respect for the sovereignty of the countries of the region, respect for territorial integrity, and opposition to any changes to borders. These are consistent with the positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The issue of the corridor has been completely put aside, and we are talking about a transit road that will be built under the sovereignty and jurisdiction of Armenia, on the territory of this country.”
According to him, the implementation of this project is the responsibility of a company, which, as stated, will be an American-Armenian company registered in Armenia and operating under the laws of this country.
“Of course, as noted in the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, any foreign presence in the region, in any form, can have negative consequences for peace and stability in the region. We have always raised this issue with the Azerbaijani and Armenian sides and will reiterate it. We are closely following the developments. “So far, our principled positions have been respected, but the possible presence of an American company is a cause for concern, and we will continue our consultations on this issue. Iran has warned against any foreign presence in the region and stressed that such action could threaten peace and stability. The possible presence of an American company in this project is a cause for concern for Iran, and this issue has been discussed with the parties. We are closely following developments,” he said.
