A 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck western Turkey, the country’s emergency management agency said.
The quake struck at 7:53 p.m. local time, with its epicenter in the Sindirgi district of Balikesir province. The epicenter was at a depth of 11 kilometers.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, Interior Ministry Chief Ali Yerlikaya said. “The earthquake was felt in Istanbul and neighboring provinces. No negative effects are currently being observed. We are monitoring the situation in real time,” the minister wrote on Twitter.
TRT Haber reported that the tremors were felt for 20-30 seconds in at least 10 regions in western Turkey, including Istanbul. There are problems with mobile phone connections in some areas.
