Arman Babajanyan, the chairman of the “For the Republic” party, wrote on his Facebook page:
“In their co-authored article, published yesterday in Politico, Garry Kasparov and Gabrielius Landsbergis specifically emphasize that Armenia, along with Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia, is at the forefront of the struggle for democracy. They warn that if the European Union does not offer these countries a transparent, credible, and realistic path to a European future, the enemies of democracy will define that path in their interests.
The article presents Armenia as a country whose society has a clear Western identity, whose political fate can play a decisive role in regional stability and the security of all of Europe. The message about Armenia is as follows: “Armenia is a country whose people overwhelmingly identify with Western civilization. The European Union must offer Armenia a credible European perspective; otherwise, authoritarianism will continue to spread right there, behind our backs.”
Kasparov and Landsbergis effectively declare that Armenia is a question of European grand politics. It can no longer be viewed only in the context of the former Soviet territory. The question of Armenia has become a question of the future of Europe.
This analysis is a clear message to the political elite and civil society of Armenia: the country faces a choice, and that choice is not between Russia and the West, but between dignity and slavery, democracy and dictatorship.”
