The US State Department has responded to reports that the administration of US President Donald Trump has presented a proposal to Armenia and Azerbaijan to unblock communications in the South Caucasus.
In response to a request from “Armenpress“, the US State Department’s press office stated that it has no information about the reports published in the press.
“The United States supports efforts aimed at strengthening peace and stability in the South Caucasus. We do not have any information that we can provide regarding these reports in the press,” the State Department press service representative said in a response.
Earlier, Carnegie Endowment analyst Olesya Vardanyan, citing two foreign diplomats, noted that the administration of US President Donald Trump has presented a proposal to Yerevan and Baku regarding a road connecting Azerbaijan with Nakhichevan through the territory of Armenia.
According to these sources, the American proposal is similar to a version circulated by the European Union years ago, which was based on a plan agreed upon between Russia and Georgia after the 2008 war. Under it, the parties planned to hand over the management of routes passing through the disputed regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia to an independent Swiss company, which would then undertake to transfer logistical data to all interested parties.
