New details of the Gaza peace proposal were released Sunday, as Israel sent a negotiating team to Qatar ahead of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s visit to the White House.
Earlier, Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed at least 38 Palestinians.
“20 hostages are alive, 30 are dead. I am determined, we are determined, to return them all. We are also determined to ensure that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel,” Netanyahu said before leaving for the United States.
Some details of the peace proposal presented by the mediators to Hamas have been revealed, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The document sets out a 60-day peace plan, under which Hamas must release 10 live hostages, return the bodies of 18 dead, and withdraw Israeli forces from Gaza’s buffer zone along the borders with Israel and Egypt. It also provides for the provision of large-scale humanitarian aid.
According to the document, the aid will be distributed by UN agencies and the Palestinian Red Crescent. The document does not specify what fate awaits the American organization that has been providing food aid since May under the Gaza Humanitarian Fund. Israel wants it to replace the UN coordinating body.
