California Governor Gavin Newsom has responded to Donald Trump’s administration’s threats of arrest, saying he is prepared to respond to any legal challenge.
The threats come amid more than a week of unrest in Los Angeles as law enforcement tries to calm protesters protesting against the state’s immigration crackdown.
The Trump administration’s “border czar,” Tom Homan, warned Saturday that immigration enforcement will continue despite criticism from Democratic leaders. He threatened criminal charges against anyone obstructing the state’s work, including Governor Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. He also said, “None of them have crossed the border yet.”
In an interview with MSNBC, Newsom responded sharply to Homan:
“Let him come and arrest me. He knows where I am. These kinds of demonstrative outbursts are tiring. So, Tom, arrest me. Let’s go.”
On the other hand, Mayor Karen Bass has eased the tension, noting that her goal is not to confront the federal government.
