Israel has retrieved thousands of files related to the country’s most notorious spy, Eli Cohen, in a special operation in Syria, the AP reports. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu released some of the files on Sunday, handing over some to Cohen’s wife, Nadia Cohen. The day marked the 60th anniversary of Cohen’s execution. He was hanged in a Damascus square on May 18, 1965.
The archive, which includes about 2,500 files, includes documents, recordings, photographs, and personal items collected by Syrian intelligence after Cohen was captured. The files include Cohen’s handwritten letters to his family, photos of his spying activities, house keys, fake passports, and instructions from the Mossad.
The Israeli government notes that the archive has been preserved to this day in the vaults of the Syrian intelligence services and has now been brought to Israel in a special operation.
Nadia Cohen, in turn, noted that the most essential goal remains the return of her husband’s remains. In response, the Prime Minister confirmed that Israel continues to work in this direction. It should be recalled that Cohen’s body has not been returned to Israel.
