Due to the reduction of US financial support, testing and monitoring of HIV patients in South Africa have significantly decreased, especially among pregnant women, newborns, and young people, writes Reuters.
South Africa has the highest HIV infection rate in the world – about 8 million people. This is about 20% of adults. Every fifth adult is infected with HIV.
Until recently, the United States financed about 17% of South Africa’s HIV program, providing more than $400 million annually. These funds, in particular, paid the salaries of about 15,000 health workers.
