Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, with whom they discussed energy cooperation and regional issues. The Azerbaijani media also touched upon the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process.
During the meeting, Kaja Kallas stated that the EU and Azerbaijan have established successful and practical cooperation in the energy sector. Regarding transport ties, Kallas emphasized Azerbaijan’s role as an essential regional state.
Aliyev, in turn, stated that Azerbaijan is a reliable partner of the European Union. He touched upon the role of the Southern Gas Corridor. According to him, Azerbaijan supplies gas to 10 European countries, 8 of which are members of the European Union. The President noted that regarding the geographical scope of gas supplies, Azerbaijan was one of the first countries to provide gas to European territory.
He also highlighted Azerbaijan’s role in developing the Trans-Caspian Energy Corridor and implementing projects in the Black Sea with the participation of Georgia, Romania, Hungary, and, most recently, Bulgaria. Ilham Aliyev said there are broad opportunities for cooperation between Azerbaijan and the EU in the transport sector.
The parties also exchanged views on the issue of ensuring lasting stability in the South Caucasus.
According to Azerbaijani media reports, Aliyev stated that steps are being taken bilaterally and that negotiations are underway to normalize relations with Armenia.
