Today, we remember the Armenian Genocide and honor the memory of those who suffered in one of the most terrible disasters of the 20th century, said US President Donald Trump in his message:
“Starting in 1915, one and a half million Armenians were deported and sentenced to death in the final years of the Ottoman Empire. On this day of remembrance, we once again join the great Armenian community in America and around the world in mourning the many lives lost.
Every year on April 24, we remember the strong and unbreakable bonds between the American and Armenian peoples. We are proud of the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, founded in 1915, which provided vital humanitarian assistance to Armenian refugees, and we are grateful to the thousands of Americans who helped Armenians expelled from their homes.
This day is a testament to the strength and resilience of the Armenian people in the face of tragedy. We are fortunate that so many Armenians have brought their rich culture to our shores and have made many contributions to our country, including distinguished soldiers, renowned artists, architects, and successful entrepreneurs.
As we remember those who have lost their lives, my administration remains committed to protecting religious freedom and vulnerable minorities. We look forward to continuing our strategic partnership with Armenia and supporting regional stability as we strive to achieve lasting prosperity and security,” Trump said in his message.
