The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia has stated on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.
“Today, on the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, we pay tribute and commemorate the memory of 1.5 million Armenians who were martyred as a result of the Genocide.
During the last period of the Ottoman Empire, a significant part of the Armenian people, including children, women, and older people, were exterminated based on their nationality, their material property was confiscated, and a significant part of the rich historical and cultural heritage dating back thousands of years was destroyed.
It was the realization of the imperative to prevent crimes such as the Armenian Genocide that led to the need to legally define the crime of Genocide, which was manifested in the adoption of the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Nevertheless, the Great Genocide sadly remained not only the last crime against humanity of the 20th century but also a symbol of hatred and racial and ethnic intolerance. We continue to witness new mass crimes based on Genocide in the 21st century.
Armenia continues to be actively involved in initiatives aimed at early detection of trends in such crimes, rapid response to them, and prevention and elimination of these crimes. In 2015, through Armenia’s efforts, December 9 was included in the UN list of international days as the International Day of Remembrance and Dignity of the Victims of the Crime of Genocide and the Prevention of this Crime. In continuation of the resolutions adopted in previous years, in 2024, In April, the resolution “Prevention of Genocide” submitted by Armenia was adopted by consensus at the 55th session of the UN Human Rights Council. All these efforts aim to turn “never again” from a slogan into a reality.
