The Telegraph writes that former US President Donald Trump, as part of a proposed peace deal, is ready to allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to keep almost all the territories seized from Ukraine.
According to the newspaper, this proposal is part of a seven-point plan designed to end the war but does not provide Ukraine with explicit security guarantees from the US. The plan will be discussed Wednesday in London, where American officials will hear Kyiv’s response.
According to the proposal, the US is ready to formally recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea, as well as de facto accept the retention of other occupied territories by Russia.
This means a freeze on the front line, allowing Putin to keep almost all the territories under his control.
However, the plan includes some changes that could benefit Ukraine. In particular, Russia will give up two small territories under its control. Ukraine will regain access to the Dnieper River estuary, and Russia will withdraw from the second territory in the Kherson region.
US special envoy General Keith Kellogg hopes to get Ukraine’s agreement on the plan. His counterpart, Steve Witkoff, will then travel to Moscow to present the plan to Vladimir Putin.
However, as The Telegraph notes, Kyiv will find the plan difficult to accept because it involves the loss of territory without clear security guarantees. Ukrainian officials told the newspaper that they are skeptical about the peace deal’s success.
