Restoring unhindered passage between the western regions of Azerbaijan and Nakhichevan is a problem. We need to understand what is happening, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said during a joint press conference with Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon.
“Negotiations on this issue have been ongoing intensively for a long time. Unfortunately, no practical results have been achieved in this regard. Azerbaijan is moving in that direction; Armenia has not yet fulfilled this agreement. In addition to the opening of general communications, Azerbaijan demands a special approach to establishing ties between the western regions and Nakhichevan. Because there is no such case where the country will be divided into two parts. I do not want to dwell on its historical aspects. Armenia made a commitment to unhindered passage back in 2020, and it must be fulfilled,” he said.
Bayramov also mentioned that the passage to Nakhichevan should be legally fixed and unhindered.
“For Azerbaijan, this transition should be unhindered; there should be no obstacles. This should be an obligation so that any further changes to Armenian legislation do not create an opportunity to change this situation in the short, long, or medium term because we have experienced this once. In the Soviet years, we had an unhindered transition, but it was disrupted, and the region with a population of more than 300 thousand people found itself under blockade. Azerbaijan expects to ensure free and unhindered transition, regardless of any elements of a change in the political configuration,” he emphasized.
