“In my opinion, there should be no reference to the Declaration of Independence in the text of the new constitution,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said in a conversation with journalists at the National Assembly.
“In my address on the Day of the Declaration of Independence in 2022 or 2023, even in 2024, I said that having studied the text of the declaration, having read it anew, I found that this text is about the fact that there cannot be an independent statehood of Armenia. It is impossible. If I have said that, I cannot say that there should be a reference to the Declaration of Independence in the text of the new constitution. On the contrary, I believe there should be no reference to the Declaration of Independence in the new constitution. Still, the people are the ones who decide; of course, the political forces and leaders are the ones who bring arguments for and against. That is my political position,” Pashinyan noted.
According to him, the issue of adopting a new constitution was on the agenda immediately after the revolution, and he himself addressed this issue as early as January 2020.
“The main problem I see is a rupture in the organic connection between the legal order and the citizens. And I see this in my daily work. The legal order, which stems from the constitution, is cut off from the people for one simple reason: all constitutional referendums have not received the necessary number of votes from the people. In other words, the results of the referendums have been manipulated and falsified,” the Prime Minister noted.
