The UK’s King Charles III and his wife, Queen Camilla, have arrived in Italy for a four-day official visit.
BBC royal correspondent Sean Coughlan reports from Rome that the royal couple has landed at Rome’s Ciampino airport. A guard of honor greeted them, Italian government officials, and the UK ambassador, Edward Llewelyn, who called the visit “historic.”
“This official visit comes at a crucial time as we rebuild our relationship with our European partners,” the ambassador said.
The trip was originally due to include a visit to the Vatican, but plans have been changed due to Pope Francis’ illness. The Pope, recovering and discharged from hospital after a five-week stay, was seen in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican over the weekend. However, Charles III and Francis have no personal meeting scheduled for now.
