US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on foreign cars.
“We are going to impose a 25% tariff on all cars not made in the United States,” Trump said. “We are starting with a 2.5% base tariff that we have now and going up to 25%.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney immediately condemned the announcement, calling it a “direct attack” on Canadian workers. “We will protect our workers, our companies, our country, and we will protect it together,” Carney said.
Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said his government was considering “appropriate measures” to respond to the announcement. “Of course, we will consider all options.”
According to Trump, the tariffs will take effect next week, April 2, and the United States will begin collecting them the next day. “This is very encouraging,” he said, noting that the move would boost economic growth.
In February, Trump discussed imposing a 25% tariff on imported cars but did not provide details. On Monday, the president hinted that tariffs on the auto industry could be “very shortly.”
