Akif Çağatay Kılıç, the Turkish President’s chief advisor on foreign policy and security, spoke about Armenian-Azerbaijani and Armenian-Turkish relations, also touching upon the peace treaty.
“Our position on the process of normalizing relations between Turkey and Armenia is known in advance: for us, the security of Azerbaijan and its territorial integrity are the most critical factors. Speaking from this position, we are closely following the process between Azerbaijan and Armenia after the second Karabakh war, the issue of the peace treaty, and are taking appropriate steps.
Naturally, we are in discussions with Armenia. There are international structures in which Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Armenia are represented. We are working towards finding the right solution, moving forward together, and living in peace,” he said.
Responding to whether the mutual opening of diplomatic missions between Turkey and Armenia is being discussed at the current stage, he replied, “In the current situation, there are no prerequisites for discussing this issue. And I have no information about this. Again, let me state that our position on this process is known: a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia will be the key to resolving many issues. The issue we are currently focused on is the process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”
Kılıç, responding to the question of the EU and France supplying weapons to Armenia, noted that Turkey and Azerbaijan will work together “to avoid undesirable situations.”
“The process of Turkey’s accession to the European Union has been going on for 60 years. There has been injustice towards Turkey in this process. During this time, we have learned how the structures of the European Union work. In this context, Turkey and Azerbaijan will work together to avoid undesirable situations,” he said.
