French President Emmanuel Macron held a closed-door meeting in Paris with the chiefs of staff of about thirty countries. As reported by the newspaper Le Figaro, he called for developing a “decision on reliable security guarantees” for Ukraine if a peace agreement with Russia is signed.
As reported by AFP, representatives of 34 countries took part in the meeting in Paris. We are mainly talking about the EU and NATO member states. Still, not only were representatives of the EU and NATO member states present at the negotiations, but representatives of Australia, New Zealand, and Japan were present. At the same time, the US representative did not participate in the event.
“It is time for Europe to show its full weight in favor of Ukraine and itself. Given the acceleration of peace negotiations, it is necessary to start planning the decision on reliable security guarantees so that a lasting peace in Ukraine becomes a reality,” Macron said.
According to the French president’s press service, the participants in the meeting agreed that Ukraine’s security guarantees should not be separated from NATO and its capabilities. Such guarantees should be reliable and long-term and accompanied by constant support for the Ukrainian army.
