Mark Carney has been elected leader of Canada’s ruling Liberal Party. He will replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his intention to resign in January.
Carney was the only candidate for the party’s leadership who was not a Trudeau government member. According to the vote results, he received 85.9%.
Mark Carney previously headed the central bank and coordinated measures to overcome financial crises in North America and the UK.
Given Donald Trump’s territorial ambitions, the new prime minister faces complex tariff negotiations with the United States and the expected tough fight with the opposition in the upcoming general election.
In his speech after the victory, Carney accused Trump of trying to occupy Canada and said this attempt must be stopped.
“Americans need our resources—water, land, and country,” he said. “If they could do that, they would destroy our way of life.”
“America is not Canada. Canada will never be part of America, in any way or form,” Carney added.
Outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave an emotional speech. He said the United States presented Canada with an “existential challenge” and stressed his pride in his achievements during his tenure.
“Let no one misunderstand; I am incredibly proud of what we have done over the past 10 years,” Trudeau said, adding, “But today it is about our future as a party, as a country.”
