Sergey Donchenko, director of the Russian Research Institute of Physical and Technical Measurements and Radio Engineering, told RIA Novosti in an interview that they are ready to solve the problem of removing one second from universal time.
According to Vitaly Palchikov, the institute’s chief researcher, the Earth’s rotation speed has been growing anomalous in recent years. It is estimated that by 2029, it will be necessary to remove one second to neutralize the consequences of this phenomenon.
He noted that the Earth is constantly changing its rotation speed and is currently in an acceleration phase. Scientists still do not have a clear answer to why this is happening. Donchenko notes that one possible reason may be the planet’s warming, the melting of glaciers, and the redistribution of water masses.
“However, this is most likely not the main reason. The Earth is warming, and active processes are taking place inside the planet. “It is likely that this is not related to emissions caused by human activity and is unlikely to be a sign of a serious cataclysm,” he concluded.
