French President Emmanuel Macron said a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia could be reached in the coming weeks.
In an interview with Fox News, which took place at the White House in Washington after talks with Donald Trump on the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion, Macron said that any peace agreement in Ukraine “must not be a capitulation of Ukraine” and must be backed by security guarantees.
The French leader also said that Trump’s possible return to the White House would “change the game’s rules.” He added that he “considers it possible” to start talks on a ceasefire and a lasting peace within weeks.
Macron said he had discussed the issue with 30 other European leaders and allies, many of whom are ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine.
He also said he had worked with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on a proposal to send troops to the region. Macron clarified, “Not to send to the front line, not to enter into confrontation, but to be present in certain areas determined by the agreement as a guarantee of maintaining that peace and our collective trust, with the support of the United States.”
