Levon Azizyan, director of the Center for Hydrometeorology and Monitoring SNCO, writes that Glaciologist Mauri Pelto analyzed NASA satellite images and reported that the snow line on Everest rose by 150 meters from December 2024 to January 2025.
This is evidence of climate warming and a decrease in snow cover. The reason is a drier and warmer winter and intensive evaporation. December 2024 was 20-25% drier than normal in Nepal, leading to drought and reduced rainfall.
The trend continued in January 2025, with Everest’s snowpack no longer holding and glaciers retreating even at altitudes above 6,000 meters. Satellite monitoring records these processes in real-time, helping scientists predict future changes in the Himalayas.
