The RA Representative for International Legal Affairs announced on his social media page that on February 12, 2025, the Republic of Armenia received the claim submitted by the Republic of Azerbaijan in the arbitration case initiated within the framework of the Bern Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats of 1979.
“This follows from the procedural calendar approved by the arbitral tribunal, established after the first procedural hearing on April 12, 2024, during which several decisions favorable to the Republic of Armenia were made.
Armenia will continue to defend its position in the proceedings. Azerbaijan’s legal position is based on an interpretation and application of the Bern Convention that does not coincide with its goals and objectives, which are to promote cooperation between states to conserve wild flora and fauna and their natural habitats.
Contrary to Azerbaijan’s claims, reports by the UN Environment Program and other independent bodies prove that Azerbaijan is responsible for the environmental damage caused in recent years. Armenia will refute Azerbaijan’s unfounded claims, including the demand for compensation.
Since joining the Bern Convention, Armenia has consistently committed to preserving the region’s wildlife and environment. This is reflected in its environmental policy and active involvement in the work of the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention.
