At least 901 people were executed in Iran during 2024, including nearly 40 in the first week of December alone.
BBC writes that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, said that the number of executions continues to increase, which causes great concern.
According to the UN, the main reason for executions is drug-related crimes, but those executed include political activists and people linked to the protests of 2022. The number of women executed has also increased.
This year, the number of executions in Iran exceeded last year’s figure by about 6%.
A report released Monday by IHR experts said at least 31 women were executed in Iran in 2024, the highest number in the 17 years the organization has been collecting such statistics. It said 19 women were sentenced to death on charges of murder. Another 12 women on death row were convicted of drug-related crimes.
