Reuters reports that the government of Sudan has suspended its participation in the Integrated Food Safety Regulatory System (IPC). This decision was made on the eve of the report’s publication, which, according to forecasts, should have shown that “hunger has spread more in the country.” The government accused the IPC of “publishing unreliable reports that undermine Sudan’s sovereignty and dignity.”
An upcoming report is expected to record that famine has spread to five regions of Sudan. If the situation is not resolved, the famine may cover 10 regions by May. The main reasons for the deepening of the hunger crisis are “the country’s internal armed conflict” and “limited access to humanitarian aid.”
This decision by Sudan may hinder the international community’s efforts to assess the situation accurately and help the people affected by the famine.
