The Wall Street Journal reports that the transition administration of newly elected US President Donald Trump is discussing a new scenario for the end of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The plan consists of the following points: the current front line is frozen, and a demilitarized zone is declared along its entire length. It is not clear who will ensure its security, but one of the newspaper’s interviewees ruled out the involvement of American troops, the UN contingent, and other US-funded organizations.
Ukraine will abandon its plans to join NATO for at least another 20 years. For this, the USA will continue to supply him with weapons.
Such a zone exists, for example, between the DPRK and South Korea. It also exists in Cyprus, where it is called the “green line” and separates the Turkish and Greek parts of the island.
Vice President-elect JD Vance said that Trump will turn to the Russians, Ukrainians, and Europeans and tell them: “You have to decide what the peace settlement will look like.” According to Vance, the deal would assume that Russia would retain former Ukrainian territories, create a demilitarized zone along the current front line, and strengthen Ukrainian troops in the event of a second conflict.
According to him, Moscow will receive guarantees that Ukraine will not join the alliances.
