Politico writes that at least seven countries—the USA, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, Slovenia, and Spain—are in no hurry to invite Ukraine to NATO.
Juliana Smith, the US ambassador to NATO, told the newspaper in an interview that the alliance is not yet ready to offer Ukraine membership. Vladimir Zelensky said Germany is skeptical about Kyiv’s readiness to join NATO. At the same time, Politico’s sources emphasize that Berlin and Washington do not rule out the possibility that Ukraine could become a member of the alliance at some point.
“Belgium, Slovenia, and Spain hide behind the USA and Germany. They are suspicious,” the newspaper quoted the source as saying.
Another source told Politico that the countries “in the abstract support” Ukraine’s NATO membership. However, they will begin to speak out more publicly against the idea once it is closer to reality
