At today’s session of the European Parliament, a resolution on the rapprochement of relations between the EU and Armenia and a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia were put to the vote.
The resolution was presented by the parliamentary group of the European People’s Party. In one of the points of the resolution, the members of the European Parliament propose to discuss the possible perspectives of closer EU-Armenia cooperation and even membership.
In that point of the resolution, in particular, it is said: “According to Article 49 of the Treaty on the European Union, any European state can apply to become a member of the European Union, provided that it adheres to the Copenhagen standards and the principles of democracy, respects fundamental freedoms, human and minority rights, and protects the rule of law. If Armenia is interested in obtaining candidate status and continues to pursue sustainable reforms that strengthen its democracy, this could be the basis for a transformational phase in EU-Armenia relations. We call on the Commission and the Council to actively support Armenia’s desire to expand cooperation with the EU in economic partnership and political dialogue, people-to-people contacts, sectoral integration, and cooperation in the security field,” the resolution reads.
