On February 2, the chairman of the NA Standing Committee on Science, Education, Culture, Diaspora, Youth and Sports Affairs, Sisak Gabrielyan, and deputy chairman of the committee, Taguhi Ghazaryan, met with the teachers and students of the schools of Tavush and Gegharkunik regions, participants of the “Media literate and protected communities” educational program. RA NA Speaker Alen Simonyan attended the meeting and talked with the guests.
Media literacy classes and clubs were opened in 4 primary and high schools of Tavush and Gegharkunik marzes, where students took courses in media literacy, checking fake news, civic education, development of exam thinking through alternative educational methods, watching interesting films, playing games, etc.
Gayane Abrahamyan, the president of “For Equal Rights” NGO, presented the program implemented during the last year. Welcoming the guests, NA Speaker Alen Simonyan noted that he worked with Gayane Abrahamyan at the seventh convocation session of the RA NA and was happy about this meeting. He emphasized that the ruling party’s relationship with the people is essential. Alen Simonyan was interested in the existing problems and gaps.
Turning to the question regarding the name of the textbook “History of Armenians” or “History of Armenia,” Alen Simonyan noted that it is essential to strengthen the idea of statehood from a young age. “In our opinion, during the Soviet period, everything was done to remove the idea of statehood from the subconscious level. We desire to emphasize the state mentality to strengthen the cornerstone of statehood. But we are ready to listen to opinions as well,” said the Speaker of the National Assembly.
The meeting participants considered the lack of male educators in schools worrying, noting that they can play an essential role in educating teenage students. Questions related to the new credit system for transitioning from school to university, college, and educational institutions were also discussed. The commission’s chairman, Sisak Gabrielyan, expressed his willingness to study the issues in detail and present them in the relevant instances.
