Yemen has been divided between various warring factions and forces for years, it is in a de facto frozen phase of civil war, and the ruling powers there are all under the influence of the major powers in the region in one way or another.
Houthis – “Ansar Allah” group controls the coastal regions of the Red Sea, the west of the country. The Houthi movement was founded by Hussein Houthi, the movement is led by his brother, Abdul-Malik Houthi. It controls the country’s capital, Sana’a. Most of the population of Yemen lives in their territories. Since the Gaza war, it has launched attacks on commercial and military ships going to Israel and passing through the Red Sea. The Houthis are traditionally under the influence of Iran and are guided by Iran’s regional interests. The US and its allies are actively militarizing the Red Sea to secure shipping and to attack the pro-Iranian Houthis.
Hadistner – The official capital is Marib. It is the internationally recognized government of Yemen. It is considered the sphere of influence of Saudi Arabia and its allies. They are led by the former president of Yemen, Hadi Mansour.
Southern Transitional Council – Governed by the Council of Chiefs of the Southern Nahaks. It does not recognize the other two forces, calls for the division of Yemen and is considered the sphere of influence of the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
