“EU monitoring observers stationed at the Armenian-Azerbaijani border transmit information to the official Baku about the conduct of patrols on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border,” Politico reports, citing a high-ranking official of the EU diplomatic service.
Speaking to Politico anonymously, a senior official in the EU’s diplomatic service lamented that the monitoring mission’s relationship with Baku had deteriorated. “We hoped for a different scenario with Baku. We are passing all the relevant information on the patrol service to Azerbaijan because we don’t want to create any problems,” said the diplomatic source.
Politico also writes that with Russia focused on the war against Ukraine, Brussels hoped to strengthen its presence in the South Caucasus by building economic ties with Azerbaijan while offering political support to neighboring Armenia and trying to maintain a balance between the two rival states.
