The material damage caused by the devastating earthquakes in Turkey is 34.2 billion dollars (645 billion 884 million 100 thousand Turkish liras).
This was announced by Humberto Lopez, director of the World Bank (WB) office in Turkey, presenting the “Global Rapid Disaster Damage Assessment Report” (GRADE). He also noted that the figure corresponds to 4% of Turkey’s gross domestic product (GDP).
The report indicated that continued aftershocks could increase the extent of the damage over time.
Noting that the earthquake region also includes some of Turkey’s provinces with the highest poverty levels, the report said the area is home to almost 50% of Syrian refugees, more than 1.7 million.
The report also estimated that 1.25 million people were temporarily homeless due to the total or partial collapse of buildings.
