In a conversation with Radar Armenia, Nvard Vardanyan, the chairman of the Standing Committee on Urban Development and Land Use of the Yerevan Council of Elders, a member of the “My Step” faction, summed up the past year, 2022.
– In your opinion, what kind of year was 2022 for Yerevan?
– Globally, I evaluate the year positively because many projects were implemented. For example, I can cite the construction of a new metro station, for which 700 million drams have already been spent. This means that in 2023 we will announce a construction tender. Some actual steps have been taken, which I assess positively. Long-term plans need to catch the eye of the citizen. These are the changes that will be visible in a few years.
– The public is too apprehensive about the transport reforms. Could you tell me what has been done about this and what to expect in 2023?
– After 2018, when our political team came to power, there was a proposal from the government to Mr. Marutyan that we need long-term plan to fundamentally change the transportation system. But then he chose to take a faster route and try to resolve the matter partially. It didn’t work because the problem is relevant to this day. And now, I know that there is a goal to work in parallel with the government’s support because the city budget needs to be more to carry out such a tremendous amount of work. It is planned to change the entire transport system and settle the issue fundamentally.
