The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announced today that it is withdrawing from OPEC and OPEC+. The unexpected decision is a major blow to the oil-exporting group and its de facto leader, Saudi Arabia, especially at a time of energy crisis caused by the war with Iran.
The UAE’s move comes amid deep regional discontent. The Emirates has criticized other Arab countries and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) for taking a “historically weak” stance in defending itself from Iranian attacks during the war.
Anwar Gargash, an adviser to the UAE president, said that while there was logistical support, the response from allies in political and military terms was too weak.
Analysts say the UAE’s withdrawal is a major victory for US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly accused OPEC of artificially raising prices.
