The United States and Russia are discussing the possibility of concluding a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine that would strengthen Moscow’s control over Crimea and eastern Donbas, possibly forcing Kiev to withdraw from parts of Luhansk and Donetsk that are still under Ukrainian control.
Bloomberg writes, citing its sources. It is noted that US and Russian officials are working on an agreement on the territories ahead of a meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin scheduled for next week, the anonymous sources told the newspaper.
The United States is working to get Ukraine and its European allies to agree to the agreement, which, according to the sources, is still not certain. Putin demands that Ukraine cede all of its eastern Donbas territory to Russia, as well as Crimea.
There is a demand that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky order the withdrawal of troops from parts of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions still held by Kiev.
As part of the agreement, Russia will halt its offensive in Ukraine’s Kherson and Zaporizhia regions along the current battle lines, the sources said. They cautioned that the terms and plans of the agreement are still fluid and subject to change.
