In his interview to Radio Liberty (“Azatutyun” radio) Levon Zurabyan pointed to the fact that ANC (Armenian National Congress) was not going to blame or criticize actions of any force who are not the ones holding the power in the country. “It’s not that we try to avoid commenting or giving precise descriptions to actions, but rather we have initiated a new strategy of uniting all the sound political forces to change the political atmosphere in the country”, told Zurabyan during the interview.
Thus, ANC is no more tying to institute the constitutional structure of the country as it once did, but aims at altering the political atmosphere. What this alteration means becomes evident from the political course ANC has launched recently.
Alteration by ANC means trying to persuade PAP (Prosperous Armenia Party)
in its oppositional nature, while to what degree PAP is oppositional is clear to the entire population- PAP is as oppositional, as reformist is RPA (Republican Party of Armenia). The problem here is connected with the logic beyond the alteration that ANC has launched- purifying and canonizing PAP. ANC makes it sufficient for PAP being out of the coalition to never criticize it. However, this seems to be the minimum ANC does for PAP.
In particular, while talking about a joint candidate Levon Zurabyan brings in the idea of being powerful. Zurabyan states that a powerful candidate immediately becomes the unanimous for all other political forces, no matter if those others support him. Question is- which candidate is strong for Zurabyan: Levon Ter-Petrosyan or Gagik Tsarukyan. Judging on led-by-them party presence at the National Assembly, Tsarukyan is the more powerful. Notable is the fact that no matter how powerful a candidate is, results in presidential elections to a certain degree depend on the resources of his/her political force. Now what- is Gagik Tsarukyan ANC’s candidate, though one can’t reject the possibility of ANC trying to persuade Tsarukyan to put his candidacy.
There are, however, threats that Robert Kocharyan might be PAP’s candidate, and ANC will try to inspire Tsarukyan for greatness, not to let Kocharyan be a candidate otherwise. This will put ANC in a very awkward situation- sailing in between the impossibility of supporting and going against, because of the-now lack of the resource to oppose.
