Official resources report that the U.S. deputy assistant secretary has delivered a letter from President Barack Obama to the Geogrian president, in which he emphasized the importance of holding parliamentary elections in Georgia as part of the country’s democratic development.
“It was impossible to do anything more to protect the heritage of the Rose Revolution than hold free and fair elections, which confirmed the success of Georgia as a democratic state… Now, when the election is over, the whole world sees that Georgia has overcome this phase under your leadership. It is a consequence of your democratic progress and commitment to the course, and it will be your steadfast legacy.” the letter said.
As noted the U.S. president, it is necessary for Saakashvili to go on leading the country and work closely with parliament.
“You together are responsible for the continuation of the democratic and economic development. Your public statements in connection with the recognition of the election results confirmed that the interests of all Georgians are the most important for you,” the letter said.
Recall that parliamentary elections took place in Georgia on October 1, in which around 14 parties and two political blocs took part.
Georgian Dream won 85 deputies in the parliament’s mandate, and the United National Movement won 65. Ivanishvili intends to become prime minister.
