U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland is sure that “Georgia is in good hands.” Today, speaking with reporters, he again praised parliamentary elections held in Georgia and noted that “Mikheil Saakashvili showed statesmanship.”
“October 2012 in Georgia’s history will be the moment of dramatic and significant transformations since competitive elections were held, a new government was formed, which will soon be authorized. President Saakashvili expressed state and civil wisdom. I am sure that the process of transfer of power will go professionally”- said Richard Norland.
The diplomat also touched on the role of civil society in the political process and said that the non-governmental sector has to play its role in the electoral process.
“Civil society is not only a counterweight and balance, but also critical partner in political relations. NGOs should maintain neutrality and democraty, be open and constructive in the dialogue with the parties. Fortunately, Georgia has a number of experts who are willing to perform this role, “- said the Ambassador.
Richard Norland also turned to the government and encouraged it to be open in its relations with non-governmental sector.
“The government should have advisory mechanisms to facilitate dialogue with the ministries,” – he said.
