Representatives of the winning coalition in the parliamentary elections “Georgian Dream” reported that on October 20-21 at the first meeting of the new parliament it will be decided whether to return Georgian lawmakers to Tbilisi, or leave them in the second largest city Kutaisi.
The previous parliament amended the constitution, according to which after the parliamentary elections of 2012 the legislature should work in Kutaisi, where during 18 months a building was constructed for it. Most political organizations, including “Georgian Dream” coalition, voted for the return of Parliament to the capital.
“According to the constitution, the parliament building is set in Kutaisi, Georgia, and there will be held the first meeting, but the decision whether the parliament will stay in Kutaisi, will be issued after the meeting,” – said the candidate for the post of Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Zurab Abashidze on Wednesday.
Another leader of the “Georgian Dream” Gogi Topadze said that glass building of the parliament in Kutaisi is not ready to accept members, as construction works continue.
Recall that the idea to transfer the Georgian parliament from the capital city to Kutaisi offered President Mikheil Saakashvili in 2011. Parliament House was built on the site of the demolished Glory Memorial to those killed in the Great Patriotic War.
